Introduction

In the current world that uses the Internet of Things (IoT), people are more concerned about how analytics serves to improve the firm’s operations, increases autonomy and the development of independent products. This is an area of interest to researchers as organizations seek to achieve mass production of services that would feed the growing consumer needs. Recent research indicates that analytics has moved to a state where it is more oriented towards humans hence giving rise to new strategies in IoT. The new strategy is more concerned about personal augmentation and the use of simple devices that offer autonomy as opposed to the one that is focused on automation and individual devices. Considering the current trends in analytics, this paper will evaluate critical trends in analytics and develop strategies to help stay on top of the field.

Discussion

The current and future trends in analytics

Consumers are in need of an IoT that offers independent services that can be used in different environments. These services include offering technology that goes beyond security, offering services that can be used in self-quantifying, offering services that optimize the functioning of machines and creating ways of meeting the daily functions. IoT involves a range of service providers such as fast networks, AI, sensors and distributed computing (Alistair, 2015). The new trends in analytics focus on entirely transforming the human experience positively. Data suggests that the IoT programs mostly used are the ones focused on easing life in the family setting and making it more fun and enjoyable. Also, people prefer services that will give them an easier time while working with. Consumers using IoT prefer using interfaces that are more natural and less visible than screens. These apps offer individuals the right functionality and content at the right time through learning and predicting what they need.

Critical trends in the field of analytics

IoT offers technology that spans the security sphere. Today, more than ever, people want to be safe in their homes. IoT offers various solutions to this area such as the Presence system that uses the old iPhones in the provision of various cameras that cover all areas of the home environment. This means that the homeowner stays connected to this software throughout the day hence can monitor the security at home and act accordingly when there is a security threat (Wilson, Baiju & Brian, 2015). Another provision is the kit developed by Microsoft and SmartLabs that helps people do a surveillance of their homes remotely. This surveillance can be conducted at any time and from any place. Also, Google has come up with the Nest system while Apple developed the Home Kit systems focused on enabling users to monitor their home security.

IoT also provides Apps that quantify the self hence can tell a story about the user. Consumers continuously need to know how they can compare themselves with their friends, peers and family members regarding age, sleep patterns and other factors. The self-quantification app is among the most used services in IoT. Some of the devices that achieve this include wristbands which are embedded with sensors and software’s (Wilson, Baiju & Brian, 2015). Also, IoT provides services that optimize the functioning of machines. IoT service providers have come up with a service that changes the lighting of the house during day and night time. Other services help in automatically turning on heaters, refrigerators and air conditioners in the home environment hence increasing convenience and efficiency. Companies like General Electric, Whirlpool and Chai Energy indicate that the rising supply of these innovations will lead to their greater demand in future.

IoT also offers creative ways to facilitate the functioning of daily activities. There are only a few wealthy people who have the finances to purchase sensors and other technologies in their homes. With the internet, most of the services offered are affordable to nearly all individuals in different socio-economic classes (Wilson, Baiju & Brian, 2015). Some of the IoT services connect owner smartphones with the sensory parts of the environment. One such program connects the Weather Channel and the Phillips Hue Lighting system where internet-based lights turn blue in some home areas when the rain starts.

The main advantage of these critical trends is the fact they offer autonomy to the consumer. These services are personalized for use by individuals, unlike the past systems that were more community-based. Also, these systems ease the functioning of the daily activities since they are not collected. Besides, the fact that a user can monitor security in the home environment is an added advantage in an era where cases of murders and homicides are rampant. The weakness of these systems is the fact that human beings are continuously being turned into puppets in this internet age. Technology, which is an important aspect of today’s world acts as a means to an end

The function of IoT in quantifying the self can be related to the way the organizations use digital generated data in understanding consumer tastes and preferences and whether they like a specific innovation (Gabel & Cathy, 2014). Most domestic and international companies are present in social media platforms through websites, Facebook pages, and Twitter handles. Trough these innovations, companies track how their products are fairing in the market through engaging consumers in conversations in these platforms.

MIT Sloan (2015) observes that analytics can benefit both big and small organizations. Most of the big organizations are bureaucratic, fragmented and analytical environments and processes that limit the ability to operate with agility, flexibility and insight. Most of the organizations are adopting big data to increase corporate agility and speed.  Analytics in the healthcare industry helps in consolidating organizational resources to deliver a high-quality customer experience, improve the firms performance and develop better data-driven business models. Data, in this case, would be used to analyze bog volumes of data in healthcare hence facilitating the process of evidence-based decision making and action taking (Wang, Kung & Terry, 2018).

A Strategy to stay on top of the field

The development of individual development plans (IDPs) is important since it enables individuals to develop skills, missions and achieve their career goals (Jacobson, 2014). IDPs can be used by supervisors to develop and motivate their staff. It helps managers to seek an effective approach that will cover everyone’s training and developmental needs and also enhance employee productivity.  Taking inventory is one is the important parts in making an individual development plan. This involves the development of an objective and focusing on developing ones strengths and not compensating for the weaknesses (Wax, 2017). Writing a mission statement is also important as it helps in measuring one’s actions against a pre-determined criterion. Researching what one needs to learn to improve in a specific area and gain knowledge is also essential.

Also, one needs to develop two plans that are aligned with achieving the same objectives. This acts as a motivation and helps the individual to remain focused on reaching the goals set.

Besides, it is imperative to develop an assessment standard that will help an individual to remain focused (Wax, 2017). Goals that cannot be assessed are difficult to remain focused in. It is also helpful to develop milestones that will determine whether an individual is focused or not. The assessments need to be done periodically to help determine the progress. Also, it is important to start working on the individual development plan immediately after writing the plan to avoid procrastination.

Conclusion

Analytics has emerged as an essential field in today’s world majorly due to the need for managing Big Data. Businesses and other organizations have been using big data to manage the large databases of information. In the traditional setup, data was stored in the form of rows and columns, but today, data is stored in a variety of ways such as emails, messages, and tweets (Galbraith, 2014). This data is usually affordable and can be accessed in real time. Data in the traditional setting was historical and described outcomes that had occurred while today’s data can be accessed at any time and know its outcomes. The field of analytics is fast changing and people need to be prepared for the massive changes that will take place in the future.
